[FR] La Nouvelle Calédonie commémore cette année le 76ème anniversaire du débarquement des Américains sur l'île. En effet, le 12 mars 1942, 17 000 soldats américains débarquaient ici pour contrer l’avancée japonaise dans le Pacifique Sud : Nouméa était la plus grande base de la Navy après Pearl Harbour.
Pendant 5 ans, leur présence a bouleversé la vie de la colonie de l'époque par un brassage humain et culturel sans précédent, ainsi que par un développement économique important : les Américains étant à l’origine de la mécanisation de l’activité agricole et de l'essor de l'urbanisation en Calédonie.
De nombreux vestiges de leur passage sont encore visibles dont cette batterie de canons installée sur le fort Ouemo.
[EN] New Caledonia commemorates this year the 76th anniversary of the landing of the Americans on the island. Indeed, on March 12, 1942, 17,000 American soldiers landed here to counter the Japanese advance in the South Pacific: Nouméa was the largest base of the Navy after Pearl Harbor.
For 5 years, their presence has changed the life of the colony of the time by unprecedented human and cultural mixing, as well as by a significant economic development: the Americans being at the origin of the mechanization of the agricultural activity and the rise of urbanization in Caledonia.
Many vestiges of their passage are still visible including this battery of guns installed on Fort Ouemo.
