JAMES SADLER
PIONEER ENGLISH AERONAUT
MADE THE FIRST MANNED
BALLOON ASCENT
IN MANCHESTER
12TH MAY 1785
Although James Sadler was the first English Aeronaut his first ever flight had been in Oxford. However his fame at the time was such that the city of Manchester is still proud to record the fact that he was the first balloonist to fly in Manchester. As well as this plaque his feat is marked by naming the nearby street Balloon Street, and a nearby small square Sadler's Yard.
