Olaf Liotulfson’s Cross can be found at Saint Mary’s de Ballaugh (Old Church) – The Cronk, is an example of a Manx Celtic Cross

All Manx Celtic Crosses have unique reference number allocated by Marshall Cubbon in 1928 and Olaf Liotulfson’s Cross is Ballaugh 106

This Cross is of a slab style with a rounded head which has a carved ring on one face to form a wheel-headed cross.

The sides of the slab are cut away to leave a wide base and a tapering shaft. The foot of the cross has been fashioned to form a tenon which would have fitted into the stone socket when the Cross was originally raised.

There are five different designs on the cross-shaft and the panels to either side, including examples of ‘key-fret’, ‘tendril-pattern’ and ‘ring-chain’ on one face and ‘buckle and ring’ and a ‘plait-of-four’ on the other face. These decorations suggest that the Cross dates from AD 950 to 1,000.

There is a runic inscription on the cross which has been translated as follows:

‘Olaf Liotulfson raised this cross in memory of Ulf, his son’ Source: A Guide to the Archaeological Sites of the Isle of Man up to AD 1500 by Andrew Johnson and Allison Fox (ISBN: 978-0-955043-5-1).

Old Norse transliteration:
Áleifr/Óleifr Ljótulfs sonr reisti kross þ[e]nna eptir [Ul]f, son sinn.

English translation:
"Áleifr/Óleifr, Ljótulfrs son raised this cross in memory of Ulfr, his son."
