We were surprised when we came across this "Whispering Giant" in Winslow, Arizona. We recently found that it is sculpted from Ponderosa pine. We believe it is now posted as # 33

A Hungarian immigrant and self-taught sculptor, Peter Wolf Toth has created a remarkable body of work over the course of the last thirty-four years. This monument is part of Toth's "Trail of the Whispering Giants" that he started in 1972 and completed the 50th state in 1988. There are 70 statues in the series. Originally he intended to create one for each state; he added a few in Canada.
A statue featuring a carving of a Native-American male wearing a headdress with a bear head topped by two upright feathers. The figure has a moustache and is wearing a quill choker with medallion around his neck. “First to depict facial hair, commonly seen on Native Americans” says Toth in “Indian Giver”.
Toth started this monumental project as a tribute to native American culture. In his words, "This is my concept of the Indians of this area. I study the Indians of the area, then visualize an Indian within the log. It is a composite of all the native people of the state."
