A small portion of the San Antonio River Mission Reach has been named J.F. Kennedy Park. It is a subset of the larger Espada Park that begins south of SE Military Dr./Hwy 13 and follows Mission Pkwy southward on the west bank of the San Antonio River until the road crosses over the river to its east bank. There is a parking lot within sight of the Monterrey Oak dedicated to former Mayor Phil Hardberger. The parking area is at coordinates N29 20.766 W098 27.880. The dedicated oak tree is to the south of this parking lot by about 100 feet.

The commemorative plaque mounted on a stone extension of the circular raised wall surrounding the oak tree read as follows:

"Our water and our trees are two of our most precious resources. If we do not guard and protect them, we will lose something that is vital to our lives."
Mayor Phil Hardberger

This Monterrey Oak us dedicated in honor of Major Phil Hardberger for his commitment to our environment and to the community of San Antonio.

Dedicated by Councilman Roland Gutierrez and the Citizens of District 3

December 2007"

Phil Hardberger was born and raised in Texas. He graduated high school and then graduated from Baylor University. He then joined the US Air Force, becoming a pilot. After his active duty, he earned a Master's degree and continued on to earn a law degree. During his law career he became an Associate Judge and eventually the Chief Justice of the Fourth Court of Appeals. In 2004, he ran for Mayor of San Antonio and won in a run-off election. He was re-elected a second term and became one of San Antonio's most popular mayors. Hardberger is a strong supporter of the city's park system and worked hard to initiate the now nearly completed system of greenbelt hike and bike trails to interconnect with existing parks all around the city. As a result of his efforts, the City renamed a park after him.
