Ubon Ratachani is one of the larger cities of north east Thailand, capital of the surrounding province of the same name, and borders Laos. The city and province were founded by a Lao prince, fleeing the violence and social disorder of Vientiane, who was granted rule over the area by the then Thai King, Taksin the Great (1870s). Thao Kham Phong took the Thai royal title of Phra Pathum Wongsa.
This statue of the founder is located in the central park of the city. It is not only a statue, but a shrine. Locals pay their respects frequently. The founder is life-sized, standing, wearing traditional Thai garb, and holds a sword in his left hand.
