During the industrial Revolution Sheffield grew rapidly with Steel being its main industry.

At this area behind the railway station on a steep hill were a number of worker's houses with poor sanitation and cramped conditions. The houses were eventually demolished but the area around was left derelict.

In 2011 a regeneration project was carried out and the hillside landscaped into a park. This work included an amphitheatre and an arboretum. Pathways through the park were laid out and this stairway created to link South Street itself with the railway station and tram stop at the bottom of the hill.

In memory of Sheffield's history the steps are called 'The Steel Steps'.
