Mr. Green is buried next to his wife and near several of their grandchildren. His white marble headstone is contained in a stone holder that looks appropriate for the 1860s or later. A finger points towards Heaven at the top of the headstone, and the inscription reads:

Jeremiah Green
Born
Mar. 14, 1810,

Killed by the Indians
Aug. 22, 1863.

This simple tablet marks a
father's bier,
And those he loved in life,
in death are near.

In Texas, especially when referring to events like these, it's understood that "Indian" refers to the natives of the Americas, not natives of a country that had not yet been established. The Hood County Texas Genealogical Society (see Website) has an account of what happened to Mr. Green, taken from J.W. Wilbarger's "Indian Depredations in Texas", and given the book's 1889 publication, obviously, the details about the natives -- possibly Comanche -- are scant.

On August 22, 1863, Mr. Green was out with four other men, gathering their cattle, and while they were at rest, they encountered a group of sixteen natives. Outnumbered and with only two guns, Mr. Green's party wisely elected to not engage the natives, but unfortunately, four of them lost their nerve and bolted. Mr. Green's body was later recovered by a small company of men, and it appeared that he had been mortally wounded while mounted, only to dismount and escape into a cedar brake, apparently escaping being scalped.
