Gyanyin is revered in eastern Asia as a protective, kind and caring female figure, both by Buddhists, who perceive her to be an enlightened one—a bodhisattva, and by Hindus, who perceive her to be a Hindu deity. While Guanyin is revered by all, it has been my experience that she enjoys a larger role in the devotions of women than men. Pregnant women, older women, and women generally in need, turn to Guanyin for aid and assistance—the "Goddess of Mercy".
This statue of Qyanyin is 2 metres or so tall, a blinding white colour in the afternoon sun, and outside a small Buddhist temple at the confluence of the Mekong and Xe Don River in the town of Pakse, in southern Laos. The goddess gazes protectively out over the Mekong River.
