The design of this stamp was based on an existing painting by New Mexico artist Doug West called “Sanctuary II.” The painting shows an actual scene found in the Rio Puerco drainage area of northwest New Mexico. The two formations seen in the painting (and on the stamp) are Cerro de Santa Clara and Cerro de Guadalupe.
To reach this spot, take county road 279 off US 550 between Cuba and San Ysidro. County road 279 isn’t bad as dirt roads go but watch out for cows (and cow pies!) along the way.
