Most Thai provinces has a 'City Pillar Shrine' located in the provincial capital. This Shrine representing the centre and the spirit of the city and province. In Thai the term is 'Lak Mueang'.
The Shrine of Ubon Ratchathani is in the city centre, adjacent to the City Park. The Shrine was constructed in 1972 in a traditional Thai style. The principal aspect of the Shrine is a 3m tall golden pillar. This represents the fortune of the city and province. There are numerous smaller statues and artifacts inside the Shrine. The Shrine is surrounded by a large open area. Locals come by to pay their respects during the day.
