NRHP Nomination Form"The Broadway Cemetery Historic District is a large, urban burial ground centrally located within the city of Galveston, Texas. Composed of seven separate cemeteries, the complex occupies six city blocks and was originally set aside for family burial purposes as part of the original town charter in 1839. The cemetery complex is bound by Broadway Avenue, Avenue L, 40th and 43rd Streets. The complex is enclosed by a cast iron fence with low brick walls behind the metal fence. A vast collection of monuments, vaults, and stone markers punctuate the overall landscape of the cemetery complex and range in style from simple marble and granite headstones to impressive Classical Revival vaults and towering obelisks."
