In Westwood, at the Westwood Cemetery (Old), is an obelisk for the Ellis family, with a Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) American Revolutionary War (SAR) Veteran marker for David Ellis.
The old portion of the Westwood Cemetery is located in the south corner of the intersection of High Street and Nahatan Street.
The marker is in the oldest part of the old cemetery, which is on the High Street side. The marker is roughly in the middle of this. The monument is an obelisk made of a light stone, stained from years of exposure. There is text on several sides. The pertinent text is as follows:
"David Ellis
Son of
Jonathan Ellis & Rebecca Lewis
Born in Dedham Sept. 5, 1731
Died in Dedham Feb. 27, 1803
Aged 71."
There is an SAR marker on the other side of this text, right by this monument. The SAR marker is damaged and has the name ". . .d Ellis" and the year ". . .3 - 1808." The years aren't exact but the death year is close.
