[EN] "New Moselle ferry baptized "Sankta Maria II
The new fully electric solar ferry "Sankta Maria II" was ceremoniously baptized on Saturday on the Moselle. It will start its regular operation on December 10 between Oberbillig in the Trier-Saarburg district and Wasserbillig in Luxembourg, said Andreas Beiling, mayor of the town of Oberbillig. The 28 meter long emission-free ship will replace the 50-year-old ferry "Sankta Maria", which has recently incurred high maintenance costs due to repairs.
The new ferry, which cost a good 1.5 million euros, was subsidised by more than 40 percent from EU funds. The two communities opposite, Oberbillig and Wasserbillig/Mertert, share the costs and revenues of the ferry service. On average, the ferry carries around 143,000 people, 65,800 cars, 1,600 motorcycles and almost 20,000 bicycles, Beiling said.
The ferry is like a bridge for both villages: It is used by commuters, pupils and tourists. The ferry is the only way for motorists to cross the Moselle between Trier and Wellen (Trier-Saarburg district). There are three ferrymen in Oberbillig".
