The "Harnessing of the Atom" totem pole was carved in 1967 by Tlingit carver Amos Wallace The 15' tall totem pole is carved of western red cedar. It has five unpainted figures. From top to bottom they are:
Bald Eagle:
Represents the United States and the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
Russian Priest:
Represents Christianity and Russian influence in Alaska
Man and Sun:
Man represents harnessing the power of the universe as represented by the sun.
Raven:
In Tlingit culture, the raven released the power of the sun, moon, and stars for man.
