Katy Heath comes into the police station and tells DCI Banks and DI Morton that her 11 year old son, Kyle, was taken the previous night by two people claiming to be from social services. The case is treated as an abduction and DI Morton is assigned as liaison officer to Katy. The abductors, a man and a woman, were seen by neighbours, Mr & Mrs Harris, across the road. Mrs Harris is critical of Katy Heath, saying she works until midnight with Kyle wandering the streets whilst she is out. A search of the Heath household reveals a stash of heroin under the floorboards.

The heroin leads the police to think the abduction may have a drugs dealing element to it. Investigations show that the only fingerprints on the heroin are those of Kyle. Further, Kyle has been seen late at night playing gaming machines with large amounts of cash. The owner of the gaming arcade says that Kyle was last seen with an adult who withdrew cash from an ATM. The ATM leads the team to Kyle’s headmaster. The headmaster was in the area to meet prostitutes and bumped into Kyle, but nothing else.

Investigations into missing persons reveal that another boy had gone missing a fortnight earlier. His body is found later and Kyle’s footprints are nearby. The dead boy was found to have overdosed on heroin. The two boys are linked by the fact that they have been regular users of mini cabs. Banks thinks that the boys have been drug couriers using cabs to get around. At the taxi office they find that one of the drivers, Jimmy Chivers, has been missing for a fortnight. It also transpires that Chivers and Katy Heath have been chatting together on the internet.

Kyle’s estranged father is Paul Cain, who runs and ice cream delivery business. Banks ponders whether the heroin delivery is by ice cream van, rather than by taxi. His investigation into Chivers leads him to believe Chivers is a reformed character who is trying to rid the area of drugs, and that his abduction of Kyle might be an attempt to put Kyle on the right road.

Thongs come to a head when Paul Cain publicly offers a reward for the return of his son. Cain is followed when he drops off the ransom, but Cain give the police the slip. Banks thinks that the swap will occur at the quarry where the body was found. He is right and arrives when Chivers confronts Cain. The pair try to influence Kyle to go with them. In the end Kyle choses to go straight and inform on his father.
