The Alaska State Capitol is the home to the Legislature, Governor, and Lieutenant Governor of Alaska. The building was dedicated on February 14, 1931 and was originally named the Federal and Territorial Building. It was designed in the Art Deco style by Supervising Architect, James A. Wetmore. When Alaska became a state, in 1959, the building became the State Capitol.
The six story building has a flat roof and is made of reinforced concrete. The façade on the front of the first two floors is covered with Indiana limestone. The remainder of the building is covered with bricks with limestone trim. The two story portico entrance has four Doric columns made of Tokeen marble from Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska.
