A moderately large semi-spherical boulder, with patches of lichen is set in a thick square slab of concrete, in a Rest Area off of the Sturt Highway. The rectangular brass plaque also has a map of South Australia, with the squiggly 'Goyder's Line' imposed on it. The plaque reads:
GOYDER'S LINE
"In 1865 Surveyor-General
George Woodroffe Goyder
marked on the map of South
Australia a line delineating
drought-affected country.
"The line, which passes through
this area, became an important
factor in settlement in this
state, being regarded as an
indication of the limits of
land considered safe for
agricultural development.

George Woodroffe Goyder (1826 - 1898) was born near Liverpool, England, and moved to Glasgow to study surveying, and became a railway engineer. He migrated to Sydney in 1848, later settling in Adelaide; where he joined the Department of Lands in 1853. In 1866 a map of his explorations was published, showing his travel, which also depicted where sufficient rainfall could be expected. He also saw the need for a better supply of timber, and encouraged planting of forests. George Goyder
