The reason for the picture may not be immediately obvious but the area around Wakefield was traditionally a coal mining area.

So the two miners are working hard digging out coal - the black rock of the sign.

The pub dates from 1842 and has retained its original features including a tiled entrance despite being flanked by modern buildings.
