This 2-8-0 Steam Locomotive was constructed by the American Locomotive Company in Pittsburgh, PA for the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railway. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway purchased the KCM and O line and assigned this engine to the Newton, KS terminal. The locomotive was retired in 1955 and was on display for some time on the siding at the Standard Oil Bulk Station here in Ark City. The engine was moved six blocks to its current location in Wilson Park by laying a temporary track and moving the 100-ton engine using compressed air.
After sixty years on display, the locomotive and tender were in poor condition and underwent extensive restoration in 2017. An article describing the restoration project and re-dedication of the locomotive can be read
here. Visitors are free to climb stairs into the engineer's cabin, lean out the window, and even ring the bell while channeling their inner Casey Jones.
