This museum was in days gone by a palace complex for the King of Thailand. The complex is a series of buildings from successive ages of the Thai Kingdom. All surrounded (as you would expect) by a forbiddingly high wall. Entrance is through a grand set of gates. There is a ticket counter and the Museum admin building as you enter.
The Museum houses an extensive collection of antiquities from pre-historic to the Ayutthaya Period, three centuries back. There is a special emphasis on the "Lopburi" period of Khmer inspired art and architecture, a time when the town played a major role in the Kingdom. The layout is clear and informative. A visit is recommended for history buffs.
The collection is housed in the palace buildings constructed by King Mongkut (King Rama 4, 19th century, "The King and I") and later buildings to the 19th century. Next to King Mongkut's residence is the Chantra Paisan Pavilion. This temple-like building was originally built by King Narai and used as his audience hall before the Suttha Sawan Pavilion was completed. King Mongkut restored the building, which now houses exhibits about King Narai's reign.
The entry cost is 150 baht (us$5). For this you receive not only entree, but a well designed set of brochures.
