"Classé monument historique, le château d'Aubenas n'avait pas été rénové en profondeur depuis plus de 100 ans. Il subira d'importantes rénovations dès la fin de l'année. A terme, un centre d'art contemporain sera implanté sur le site ardéchois.
Rien d'alarmant assure la mairie. La situation du château d'Aubenas n'est pas critique même si le début de sa construction date du XIIIe siècle. La municipalité profite du déménagement du tribunal de commerce pour rénover le site classé monument historique depuis 1943. Jean-Pierre Constant, le maire d'Aubenas estime qu'il était temps de rajeunir ce patrimoine ardéchois.
La dernière rénovation majeure date au moins du siècle dernier. Il faut donc rénover le château sans pour autant dénaturer l'édifice.
Les travaux se dérouleront en deux temps :
dès la fin de l'année ou début 2017 : les rénovations les plus importantes. Certaines façades mais aussi la toiture bénéficieront d'une petite cure de jeunesse tout en gardant le style historique de l'édifice.
dans deux ans : l'intérieur du château. Quelques rénovations seront effectuées, mais il s'agit surtout d'améliorations pour installer le centre d'art contemporain.

Certaines parties du château seront aussi détruites pour corriger des anomalies.
Il y a quelques verrues à faire tomber. Par exemple, des toilettes qui surplombent une cour seront supprimées pour retrouver l'architecture d'origine.

Avec la rénovation du château et la création d'un centre d'art contemporain, le maire d'Aubenas espère bien dynamiser son activité locale.
De plus en plus de touristes viennent en Ardèche. Une tendance qui s'est accentuée avec l'ouverture de la réplique de la grotte Chauvet. La ville d'Aubenas entend bien prendre part au développement du tourisme dans le département."
