DESCRIPTION DE L'OEUVRE
Sous forme d’objet-sculpture, Catherine Sylvain a créé un immense entonnoir sous lequel sa silhouette est coulée à même une dalle de béton. La femme-entonnoir est présentée pour la première fois à l’occasion de la triennale de la relève québécoise en arts sous le nom de « L’art qui fait boom » (2e édition en 2003). Sous forme de performance, l’artiste étant couchée de tout son long, l’oreille placée à la hauteur de l’extrémité de l’entonnoir pour « laisser les mille bruits du monde se faire une place en nous et nous construire ». En son absence, les spectateurs étaient invités à faire de même et ainsi explorer une autre façon d’entrer en relation avec le monde où l’auditif est aussi important que le visuel. De plus, le rapport d’échelle gigantesque entre l’œuvre et l’humain confronte le spectateur et lui rappelle sa place dans le monde. En ce sens, La femme-entonnoir est une œuvre qui nous pousse à dépasser nos craintes d’échanger, d’interagir et de communier avec les autres individus. Pour Catherine Sylvain, l’identité humaine se définit par les relations que l’on entretient avec les autres et avec notre environnement. Ainsi, en créant des installations ou des objets-sculptures qui utilisent et mettent en scène le corps, l’artiste cherche à définir l’être humain afin d’engendrer un questionnement sur notre manière de nous approprier l’espace et d’y inscrire notre identité.
Touché par son propos, le Cirque du Soleil se porte acquéreur de l’œuvre en 2003 et l’installe sur le terrain de son siège social dans le quartier Saint-Michel. En 2016, sous la direction de l’artiste, une nouvelle édition est produite avec des matériaux plus durables afin d’assurer une meilleure pérennité.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ARTWORK
As an object-sculpture, Catherine Sylvain has created a huge funnel under which its silhouette is cast on a concrete slab. The funnel woman is presented for the first time on the occasion of the triennial of the Quebec succession in arts under the name of "The art which makes boom" (2nd edition in 2003). In the form of performance, the artist is lying all the way down, the ear placed at the height of the end of the funnel to "let the thousand noises of the world make a place in us and build us". For Catherine Sylvain, human identity is defined by the relationships we have with others and with our environment. Touched by his words, Cirque du Soleil bought the work in 2003 and installed it on the grounds of its head office in the Saint-Michel district. In 2016, under the direction of the artist, a new edition is produced with more sustainable materials to ensure greater durability.
