[GER] Das Ehrenmal soll an die Soldaten des Infanterie-Regiments „Hamburg“ (2. Hanseatisches) Nr. 76 sowie seines Reserve-Infanterie-Regiments Nr. 76 erinnern und wird dementsprechend auch 76er-Denkmal genannt.
Bauherr des Denkmals waren die Traditionsvereine des Infanterieregiments 76. Die Errichtung des Denkmals war bereits vor der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten von den Initiatoren gefordert worden, es sollte als Gegendenkmal zu dem 1931 eingeweihten Hamburger Ehrenmal („Barlach-Stele“) von Ernst Barlach am Rathausmarkt fungieren, das von nationalen Kreisen abgelehnt wurde. Die Einweihung fand am 15. März 1936 statt.

Das Hamburg-Wappen befindet sich auf der straßenabgewandten Seite bei den ersten Soldaten der Formation. Es sieht so aus, als ob die Soldaten durch das Tor Hamburgs marschieren.
