Op het Nederlandse deel van de Roer is het kanovaren onder algemene regels toegestaan. Kanovaren is alleen toegestaan in de periode tussen 1 juni en 1 oktober. Om het aantal verstoormomenten op de Roer te beperken zijn er twee vertrekmomenten, 's morgens om 10.00 uur en 's middags om 14.00. Per dagdeel mogen maximaal 20 boten starten. Indien voor een dagdeel het maximum aantal boten is gereserveerd zullen volgende aanvragen worden afgewezen. Het traject dat mag worden bevaren, is gelegen tussen de brug te Vlodrop en de brug van de Andersonweg te Roermond.
Toestemming voor het kanovaren op de Roer kan kostenloos worden aangevraagd (melden) bij het Waterschap Roer en Overmaas. Na verzending krijg je binnen twee werkdagen bericht of de melding geaccepteerd is. Het toestemmingsbewijs moet je altijd aan de controlerende ambtenaar kunnen tonen.
Kanovaren op de Roer is niet zonder gevaar en geschiedt op eigen risico. Plaatselijk kunnen de stroomsnelheden hoog zijn en kun je allerlei obstakels tegenkomen zoals omgevallen bomen. Een reddingsvest is daarom verplicht.
Kanoën alleen bij "groene" waterhoogte
Bij het instappunt kun je de waterstand en daarmee de afvoer aflezen aan de peilschaal. Let op! Bij hoge afvoeren van de Roer is het zeer gevaarlijk om te kanoën. Je wordt dan ook geadviseerd alleen te kanoën als het waterpeil zich op de instapplaats in de groene deel van de peilschaal bevindt.

Canoeing is permitted under general rules on the Dutch part of the Ruhr. Canoeing is only allowed in the period between 1 June and 1 October. To limit the number of disruptions on the Roer there are two departure times, in the morning at 10.00 and in the afternoon at 14.00. A maximum of 20 boats may be started per half day. If the maximum number of boats is reserved for a part of the day, the following applications will be rejected. The route that can be sailed is located between the bridge at Vlodrop and the bridge at the Andersonweg in Roermond.
Permission for canoeing on the river can be requested (report) at the Roer en Overmaas water board free of charge. After sending you will receive a message within two working days whether the message has been accepted. You must always show the proof of approval to the controlling official.
Canoeing on the Helm is not without danger and is done at your own risk. Locally the flow rates can be high and you can encounter all kinds of obstacles such as fallen trees. A life jacket is therefore mandatory.
Canoeing only at "green" water level
At the entry point you can read the water level and thus the drain at the level scale. Pay attention! At high discharges of the Helm, it is very dangerous to canoe. You are therefore advised to go canoeing only if the water level is at the boarding point in the green part of the water level.
