Debbie's Bridge is located at the Bear River Greenway, providing access from the trail parking lot to the walking trails on the other side of the river. The iron framed bridge is approximately 220 feet long with latticed sides allowing views of the river below. The walking surface is wood, and the safety sides are approximately 4 feet high.

Person: (taken from plaque on bridge)

Debbie Smith enjoyed running along the Bear River so much that she founded the Bear Project that started river improvements and a trail through the beautiful Bear River Greenway. Debbie was diagnosed with cancer and her last run was here on the trails that were specifically designed for all ages and abilities to enjoy. She lost her battle to cancer in 1995.

Debbie's Bridge, Dedicated 1997
Deborah Stroud Smith
July 1, 1954
December 23, 1995

In the mid 1980's, Debbie Smith, an accomplished runner and Director of the Evanston Senior Center, discovered the joy and pleasure of running along the Bear River as it flows through the heart of Evanston. Through her efforts, and foresight, the Bear Project was organized and incorporated and significant river improvements were put in place and the trail and bridge network was begun.

Debbie was diagnosed with cancer in May of 1995, and the last run of her life was enjoyed on the completed trails of the Bear Project in the fall of 1995. Her wish that others could enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Bear River, regardless of age or infirmity, has been fully realized.

Lovingly presented by her family.
