EN: The nature center BirdLife is located north of Cudrefin at the border of two large protected nature reserves. The reserve of Fanel on the territory of the cantons of Bern and Neuchâtel and the immediately adjoining Chablais de Cudrefin nature reserve in the canton of Vaud. The area is listed in six different protection classes of regional, national and international significance, making it one of the best protected areas in Switzerland. So far, 170 different species of birds have been sighted in the area, including very rare ones. Just a few of them are: Little Grebe and Great Crested Grebe, Cormorant, Little and Great Bittern.

Therefore, access is only allowed to a very limited extent. One the few exceptions is the trail at the BirdLife center that leads through a part of the protected forest and swamplands and along several ponds. It has three observation huts that hide the visitors from the birds but allow excellent observations.

The main building of the center has exhibitions, a nature laboratory with experiments and workshops for groups. The site is open from March through October. Entrance fee is CHF 8 for adults and CHF 5 for children.

FR: Le centre de la nature BirdLife est situé au nord de Cudrefin, à la frontière de deux grandes réserves naturelles protégées. La réserve de Fanel sur le territoire des cantons de Berne et de Neuchâtel et la réserve naturelle immédiatement attenante du Chablais de Cudrefin dans le canton de Vaud. La zone est classée dans six différentes classes de protection d'importance régionale, nationale et internationale, ce qui en fait l'une des zones les mieux protégées de Suisse. Jusqu'à présent, 170 espèces d'oiseaux différentes ont été observées dans la région, y compris de très rares espèces. Quelques-uns d'entre eux sont: le petit grèbe et le grèbe huppé, le cormoran, le petit et le grand butor.

Par conséquent, l'accès n'est autorisé que dans une mesure très limitée. Les quelques exceptions sont le sentier du centre BirdLife qui traverse une partie de la forêt protégée et des marécages et longe plusieurs étangs. Il possède trois cabanes d'observation qui cachent les visiteurs aux oiseaux mais permettent d'excellentes observations.

Le bâtiment principal du centre abrite des expositions, un laboratoire sur la nature avec des expériences et des ateliers pour groupes. Le site est ouvert de mars à octobre. L'entrée coûte 8 CHF pour les adultes et 5 CHF pour les enfants.

Visitors should visit the Nature Center and post a photo of themselves (or GPS unit) either inside or outside of the nature center visited. Logs without photos WILL be allowed if a lenghty description of one's visit and a mention of what they learned is included.
