Sittard, een stad om lief te hebben, vormt het centrum van de Westelijke Mijnstreek. Na Maastricht (ca 1204) en Roermond (1232) is Sittard de 3e stad (1243) met stadsrechten en is daarmee een van de oudere steden van Nederland. Sittard is rijk aan monumenten en musea. In 2000 is Sittard verkozen tot Groenste Stad van Nederland.

Het gezellige centrum, de cafeetjes en verwarmde terrasjes zorgen ervoor dat het na een dagje winkelen goed toeven is. In de avonduren bruist Sittard. De vele uitgaansgelegenheden, stadstheaters en optredens op het oude marktplein geven Sittard een wervelend karakter. Het stadsbeeld bestaat uit oude monumentale panden en vakwerkwoningen. Het nieuwe stadion van de voetbalploeg Fortuna met aangrenzend bedrijvenpark zorgt ervoor dat Sittard op sportief vlak hoog scoort. Sittard is uitgeroepen tot groenste stad van Nederland. Rondom Sittard ligt volop natuurschoon dat veelal vrij toegankelijk is zoals recreatiegebied Sittard Noord, de Windraak en het Limbrichterbos. Sittard is terecht een wandel- en fietsgebied bij uitstek.

Around Sittard there is plenty of natural beauty that is often freely accessible, such as the Sittard Noord recreation area, the Windraak and the Limbrichterbos.
