The University of Guelph dates back to 1964 and the merger of three educational institutions: Ontario Agricultural College, Ontario Veterinary College and the MacDonald Institute. Since 1964, the Greek mythical creature the gryphon (the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion) has been the mascot representing the university.
This particular statue of Gryph the gryphon was unveiled on 21 June 2014. The statue was part of the university's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The giant bronzed statue was designed by two faculty members and two graduates of the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM). Kim Kozzi and Dai Skuse are founders of the art collective FASTWÜRMS which co-ordinated research and construction of the statue. Masters of fine arts graduates Nicole Vogelzang and Dustin Wilson worked on the project for more than a year. The history of the statue is well described on the University of Guelph web site.
