As one looks south while driving across the bridges of the Susquehanna River from Wrightsville to Columbia, one can see the beautiful site of two wind turbines sitting miles away high on top of Turkey Hill in Conestoga, PA.

Years ago, on a driving vacation to South Dakota, I was absolutely in awe of the many wind farms that we passed as we drove through Minnesota. The turbines looked so majestic (and a little scary) as they woosh, woosh, wooshed slowly, round and round and round. It left a lasting impression on me and now I love to see these Goliaths mysteriously creating energy. The two turbines featured here sit on top of the hill at the Turkey Hill Preserve in Conestoga, PA. They belong to the Frey Farm Landfill Company and provide about 25% of the power for the Turkey Hill Dairy processing facility. From the Wikipedia article: (

"In 2011, Turkey Hill partnered with PPL Renewable Energy and the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority to purchase the electricity generated by two General Electric wind turbines on the Frey Farm landfill adjacent to the company’s manufacturing facility. The wind turbines are capable of producing enough power to supply 25 percent of the company’s annual electricity demand"
By taking a 3.5 mile round trip hike up the steep trails at the Turkey Hill Preserve, one can get very close to the turbines. They are fenced in and I had a difficult time finding a good angle to capture both turbines but one can both hear and feel that whooshing sound that is so much a part of this type of windmill.
In the past, tours of the landfill and the turbines have been offered but at this time, all tours are postponed until construction is completed at the windmills. When the tours are held, they are offered at no cost and visitors will see the two 1.6 megawatt wind turbines, tour the landfill and be served Turkey Hill Dairy ice cream.
