Rielle est arc-bouté sur le gouvernail qu’il tente de contrôler avec une haussière. Il porte une chemise à marinière et des sabots. Texte de certaines cartes postales : Hervé Rielle, matelot sur le Formidable, après le mémorable Combat de la Hougue, livré par Tourville aux Anglo-Hollandais le 29 mai 1692, sauva 22 vaisseaux de la flotte française qu’il fit entrer à marée basse en rade de Saint-Malo, le 31 mai 1692.
Sur le piédestal, face principale, sur une plaque de bronze : A Hervé Rielle / Né le 12 avril 1654 / Mort le 29 novembre 1729 / au Croisic / Hervé Rielle, matelot sur le Formidable / Après le mémorable combat de la Hougue / livré par Tourville aux Anglo-Hollandais / le 29 mai 1692 / sauva 22 vaisseaux de la flotte française / qu’il fit entrer, à marée basse, en rade de Saint-Malo / le 31 mai 1692

1911 : la municipalité remarque au Salon le groupe intitulé ‘Dans les brisants’ et décide d’en faire l’acquisition pour la ville. L’oeuvre détournée de son sens original est alors convertie en un monument commémoratif en hommage à Hervé Rielle. Si l’histoire conteste le rôle effectivement joué par Hervé Rielle dans la bataille de la Hague, ce monument en relate au moins la légende. 1913 : inauguration le 24 mars.

1911: the municipality notices at the Salon the group entitled 'In the breakers' and decides to make the acquisition for the city. The work diverted from its original meaning is then converted into a memorial commemorating Hervé Rielle. If the story challenges the role actually played by Hervé Rielle in the Battle of the Hague, this monument tells at least the legend. 1913: inauguration on March 24th.
