"Dès le Xe siècle, le Comte de Blois, Eudes Ier, fait bâtir une forteresse pour protéger Blois des attaques du Comte d’Anjou. En remerciement de son soutien, il offre Chaumont au chevalier normand Gelduin le Jeune. Son fils et successeur Geoffroy, sans enfant, choisit pour héritière sa nièce, Denise de Fougères. Elle épouse en 1054 Sulpice Ier d’Amboise : Chaumont devient la propriété de la famille d’Amboise pour près de cinq siècles.
Mais, en 1465, Louis XI fait détruire les bâtiments et extensions pour punir Pierre d’Amboise de s’être révolté contre le pouvoir royal. Quelques années plus tard, en 1469, le roi pardonne à Pierre d’Amboise, restitue les terres et donne des fonds pour la reconstruction de Chaumont.
De 1468 à 1510, l’aile nord (aujourd’hui disparue), l’aile ouest et un début de l’aile sud sont construites par son fils, Charles Ier, dans un style gothique. L’aile sud, le châtelet d’entrée, l’aile est, la chapelle et le grand escalier d’honneur sur cour sont achevés par son petit-fils, Charles II, dans un style plus marqué par la Renaissance.
En 1560, Catherine de Médicis, veuve du roi Henri II et régente du royaume de France, achète le château de Chaumont et contraint Diane de Poitiers, ancienne favorite du roi, à lui donner celui de Chenonceau en échange. Cette dernière y fait quelques travaux et y appose ses emblèmes au dessus des mâchicoulis du chemin de ronde. Entre la fin du XVIe et le milieu du XVIIIe siècle, les propriétaires du château de Chaumont sont nombreux à se succéder.
L'intérieur du château de Chaumont-sur-Loire
Il est acquis en 1750 par Jacques Donatien Le Ray, futur intendant des Invalides de Louis XVI. Il fait détruire l’aile nord pour ouvrir la cour d’honneur vers la Loire et fonde près du château (emplacement des actuelles écuries) une manufacture de poterie et de verrerie qui attire de nombreux artistes, dirigée par le sculpteur et graveur Jean-Baptiste Nini. Jacques Donatien Le Ray parvient à préserver de la révolution française le château où il reçut Benjamin Franklin en 1776. Son fils, dit Le Ray l’Américain le vends en 1823, au baron d’Etchegoyen.
Au XIXe siècle, le château appartient successivement au comte d’Aramon, puis au vicomte Joseph Walsh. Ils y effectuent d’importantes restaurations. En 1875, Marie-Charlotte Constance Say, fille et héritière du richissime raffineur de sucre de canne Constant Say, achète le domaine de Chaumont. Elle se marie quelques mois après avec le prince Henri-Amédée de Broglie.
Le couple ne cessera d’agrandir et d’embellir le domaine avec l’aide de l’architecte Paul-Ernest Sanson : restauration des extérieurs, modernisation des intérieurs (apport de l’électricité, du chauffage central, de l’eau courante) et construction des écuries. En 1884, l’architecte paysagiste Henri Duchêne réalise le parc d’agrément entourant le château. Mais, en 1938, la princesse, ruinée, cède le domaine à l’Etat pour 1 800 000 francs-or.
Depuis 2007, le domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire appartient à la Région Centre et est devenu depuis octobre 2008 un Centre Culturel de Rencontre : établissement reconnu par le Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication, pour ses missions de sauvegarde du patrimoine et de développement artistique et culturel."
