On the morning of September 11, 2001, Engine Company 226 responded to the Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center. FDNY radio transmissions indicated they were headed to the 78th floor to assist in the rescue and evacuation of civilians from the South Tower.
Four members of the company lost their lives: Robert Wallace, Stanley Smagala, Brian McAleese, and David DeRubbio. In addition, two men who previously served at 226 died at the World Trade Center: Michael Boyle and David Aree.
