BLM lands west of HW395. 30,000 acres in Inyo County that show the range of volcanic formations. Visitors may apply for long term (2 wks.) camping. Bouldering is one of many reasons frequent the area.

Vehicles are required to stay on existing roadways. Pack it in, pack it out rules apply. No restrooms or water. No campfires permitted on any of nearby Los Angeles Dept. Water/ Power. managed land. RVs love to shelter up a spur in the shade. Saw over 30 in Oct. This area was popular for early western movies and more recently some space terrain scenes. NO collecting of rocks or anything! Movie Road is off the Whitney Portal Road. Average elev. is 4,600 ft. Come in past Lone Ranger Canyon. How the West was Won. Local museum archive in Bishop. Paved for 3 miles? gravel beyond. Named by prospectors sympathetic to the Confederacy after the C S S Alabama. Buttermilk hills because that was what happened to milk on bumpy roads and was offered to early visitors.
