There are folks who do parts of the trail, a few days or a week at a time. There are through hikers, who aim to do the entire 2,650+ miles, in a single summer. Carson Pass is in the 8,000 ft. elevation. There are much higher points along the trail, so summer is the optimum time to attempt this. This was one of the first scenic trails in the National Trail System authorized by Congress in 1968 and dedicated in 1993. It is also used by equestrians in some areas.
Conditions can change rapidly. It is important to check trail conditions and weather with specific USFS ranger districts and other hikers (opposite direction). Fire conditions may apply.
1,615 miles of this National trail pass through California. The most popular area with European visitors. Terrain can vary from volcanic areas to hhigh elevation peaks, mountain ridges, river canyons and more.
Bear canisters (for food) rent for $2.50 /day. Parts in Calif. include 11 National Forests, 3 National Parks, 2 State Parks, and some Wilderness areas. Guns are forbidden in Natl lands. Get cowbells!
