At the time this marker was created, 1914, the Bankhead Highway ran a half mile to the north. The marker was placed along Baseline Rd shortly before its junction with the highway. Bankhead was one of the first transcontinental highways coming out of Texas, across New Mexico, into Tucson, north to Florence and the west to Mesa and Phoenix then on to Yuma and California. Baseline Road runs from this point west to the Gila River on the far west side of Phoenix. Phoenix area land surveys use Baseline Road as a starting point. This marker is a bronze cap riveted to a pipe. It comes out of the ground at an angle pointing slightly west. On the cap is stamped, U.S. General Land Office Survey 1914, Penalty $250 for Removal, T1N, R8E, S35, S36, S2, S1, CC. Note that S2/S1 are slightly offset to the west from S35/36. This offset continues today for every major street crossing Baseline and heading south. The marker is located approximately 1200 feet west of the western edge of US 60 at an angle of 90 degrees and 1200 feet south of the southern edge of US 60 at an angle of 0 degrees, US 60 having made a turn between the two points.
