EBR-1 - Experimental Breeder Reactor-I, was the first nuclear reactor to produce surplus energy: on December 21, 1951, it powered – yes – four light bulbs. The plant was decommissioned in 1964 and is now a national historic landmark. It is open daily from 9 to 5 and guided tours start as soon as there are enough people. Tours take about 90 minutes. One can also take a self guided tour and walk through the entire process of nuclear fission in about 30 minutes.
