The Coventry Nail Cross is a Christian symbol from Coventry Cathedral. It is intended to carry the idea of international reconciliation out into the world after the Second World War.
The history of the nail cross idea began with the "Operation Moonlight Sonata" of the German Air Force, the heavy air raid on Coventry on 14 November 1940, in which 550 people died and in which the late medieval St. Michael's Cathedral was destroyed along with large parts of the city centre and industrial facilities.
The cathedral provost Richard Howard had three large carpenter's nails from the roof truss of the destroyed cathedral, which were salvaged from the rubble, put together to a cross during the clean-up work.
The nail cross is handed over from the cathedral in Coventry predominantly to church congregations in order to strengthen them in their reconciliation and peace work. The goals of the worldwide nail cross community are not exclusively aimed at reconciliation after the Second World War, but are:
Heal the wounds of history,
Living with diversity and celebrating diversity,
Building a culture of peace.
As an external sign of solidarity, each nail cross centre receives a cross made of three nails from Coventry, which is modelled on the original cross.
