During the early-1920's, the Rouge River was dredged to give Great Lakes freighters access to Ford Motor Company's expanding Rouge manufacturing complex. In addition to dredging the river, three drawbridges had to be built to accomodate the large freighters. The Dix Avenue bridge, built by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. in 1926, is 222 feet long.
