This Victorian Italianate style house was constructed circa 1850. The house was occupied much of the 1870's by Catherine Hoyt, the widow of Cyrus Hoyt. Near the end of the 1870's the house was purchased by Harlow Phelps purchased the property. Prior to the Civil War, Phelps had been president of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange. During the Civil War he had fought for the Confederacy. After the war he had brought the family of a fallen comrade to Kirkwood and raised that family in this house.
