Throughout Sanibel Island you will find the gopher tortoise. In Florida the gopher tortoise is "Threatened" and as such it is protected. Island development and habitat destruction have proven to be a significant threat to the species. Motorized vehicles have proven to be the largest killer of gopher tortoises. Warning signs have been put up in areas of high gopher tortoise activity. Since gopher tortoises don't necessarily cross roads where the signs are posted please use caution while driving anywhere on the island.
This gopher tortoise crossing sign is located on Dunlop Road, ample free parking is located nearby, please do not stop in the road to log a visit due to the blind curve. Also be sure to check out other possible waymarks within walking distance.
