DCI Banks gets a call from his brother, Roy, asking him for help. Banks goes to Roy’s house, but fails to find him. Roy’s girlfriend, Corrine, doesn’t know where he is, but thinks he may be using an escort called Carmen. Banks talks to Roy’s business partner, Gareth Lambert. Lambert says Roy was involved with a woman called Jennifer Lewis that works at a family planning clinic. Banks goes to the clinic, only to be confronted by Inspector Helen Morton, a new recruit to Banks’s team, that informs him that Lewis is dead. In Lewis’s car is found a map to DCI Banks’s house.

CCTV from a garage places Roy in the same car as Jennifer. A little while later Roy is found dead in a quarry, shot with the same weapon as Jennifer. Both Jennifer and Roy have copies of Carmen’s particulars. Banks decides to call Carmen and lure her to a hotel. He gets her to the hotel and finds she is pregnant. Normally the escorts would have an abortion at the family planning clinic, so Banks wonders why Carmen is going to have the baby. Carmen walks out on Banks and the police sting falls apart in the car park of the hotel.

Carmen is eventually traced and she tells Banks that the baby is going for adoption to Gareth Lambert. Lambert tells Banks that the baby is wanted because his wife cannot have children. When Banks talks to the wife he finds that the couple have a child, but it has a heart condition. It transpires that the new baby is to be a heart donor to the existing child. Obviously Roy and Jennifer had found this out and had been murdered by Gareth Lambert.
