La Montréalaise Agnès Dumouchel détient un baccalauréat et une maîtrise en arts visuels de l’Université Concordia. Elle partage son temps entre sa production artistique et l’enseignement des arts visuels tant au secondaire qu’aux niveaux collégial et universitaire. Elle participe également à des projets de médiation culturelle, comme en témoigne Mon jardin – Ma rive, une série de 33 tableaux, dont les deux tiers ont été réalisés par des enfants de l’arrondissement de Lachine et le tiers restant, par elle-même. La série était incluse dans l’exposition La beauté du monde, en 2008, qui présentait au Pavillon de l’Entrepôt les œuvres récentes de Dumouchel.
À mi-chemin entre nature et culture, l’œuvre est intégrée de manière organique au site extérieur du musée de Lachine. En effet, la sculpture s’apparente à un abri. La base circulaire est composée d’un étagement de briques en terre cuite et comporte une ouverture basse qui permet au visiteur d’entrer au cœur de l’œuvre. À l’intérieur, le mur épouse un motif alvéolé et est surmonté d’un toit de forme conique créé par une structure en fer forgé sur laquelle l’artiste a invité les végétaux à grimper. Entièrement dégagé en hiver, couvert de feuillage en été, le sommet de la construction se transforme au gré des saisons.
Le titre de l’œuvre, Albarello, réfère aux jarres utilisées par les apothicaires au XVIe siècle, en Italie. La sculpture emprunte les formes de ces jarres et magnifie leurs dimensions pour en faire émerger une architecture où le promeneur peut trouver refuge. Le corps humain, lieu de multiples transformations et de circulation de fluides, se trouve mis en correspondance avec la fonction de ce contenant. De plus, la forme alvéolée de la pièce intérieure s’inspire d’un plan en coupe de l’intestin grêle, qui a pour fonction la transformation chimique et l’absorption des aliments. Bien que l’œuvre ait plusieurs connotations architecturales, c’est d’abord la vie qui est son thème central.

She has also taken part in cultural mediation projects, including Mon jardin – Ma rive, a series of 33 paintings of which two thirds were made by children in Lachine Borough and the other third by her. In 2008, the series was included in the exhibition La beauté du monde, which presented recent works by Dumouchel at the Pavillon de l’Entrepôt.
Presentation of the artwork
Midway between nature and culture, the artwork is organically integrated into the outdoor site of the Musée de Lachine. The sculpture seems related to a shelter. The circular base is composed of terraced terra cotta bricks and has a low opening that allows visitors to enter the interior of the work. Inside, the wall has a honeycomb motif and is topped by a conical roof formed of a forged-iron structure on which the artist has encouraged plants to climb. Completely open in winter, covered with foliage in summer, the top of the structure is transformed with the seasons.
The title of the artwork, Albarello, refers to the jars used by sixteenth-century Italian apothecaries. The sculpture borrows the shapes of these jars and expands their dimensions to create a sort of architecture in which a stroller can find refuge. The human body, site of multiple transformations and of circulation of fluids, is placed in relation to the function of this container. In addition, the honeycomb shape of the inner room is inspired by a cross section of the small intestine, the function of which is to chemically transform and absorb foods. Although the artwork has a number of architectural connotations, its central theme is life.
