Doc Thomas was a Texas Ranger who was murdered while on duty in Amarillo, in a dispute with a local sheriff who objected to the way that Thomas had handled the removal from the county jail of a man wanted in Arkansas. A Texas Ranger Memorial Cross stands in front of his monument, whose inscription reads:
