Plaque Text:
Throughout his life, the legendary writer and longtime staff member of the New Yorker Magazine maintained close ties his family and hometown of Fairmont. Robeson County life experiences greatly influenced his storytelling. His spare, elegant style proved crucial to the literary development of the twentieth century. Mitchell's use of characterization, dialogue, and symbolism set the standard for literary journalists and he was widely respected as one of the best reporters and interviewers of his time. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1970. Up in the Old Hotel, a collection of his New Yorker pieces was published in 1992. He is buried locally.
