Né à Lodz, en Pologne, Mark Prent arrive au Canada en 1948. Il fait ses études en arts visuels à l'Université Sir George Williams, à Montréal. Il enseigne les arts à l'Université Concordia à titre de spécialiste en technique de moulage. L'ensemble de ses œuvres allie réalisme et étrangeté. Il expose en Europe, au Canada et aux États-Unis. Parmi ses expositions individuelles importantes, mentionnons : au Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal en 1979, au Stedelijk Museum d'Amsterdam en 1978 et à la Kunsthalle de Nuremberg en Allemagne, en 1976.

Présentée parc René-Lévesque, à proximité du lac Saint-Louis, l’œuvre présente un voilier à trois-mâts fixé au sommet d'un haut trépied de métal. Au centre des voiles déployées du bateau se profilent des visages d'explorateurs fictifs. Un lien peut être fait entre l'élévation du navire par rapport au sol, symbolisant les ambitions des Européens venus en explorateurs découvrir le Nouveau Monde. La proue du navire pointe vers le nord, mais bien qu'elle représente une girouette, la chose est fixe et soutenue par un vent imaginaire. L'œuvre peut être interprétée comme un questionnement sur la nature humaine, les ambitions de l'homme et sa volonté d'explorer le monde.

Mark Prent was born in Lodz, Poland, and arrived in Canada in 1948. He studied visual arts at Sir George Williams University in Montréal. He teaches moulding techniques to art students at Concordia University. His body of work combines realism and strangeness. His work has been exhibited in Europe, Canada, and the United States. Among his major solo exhibitions are those at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal in 1979, at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1978, and at the Kunsthalle in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1976.

Presented in Parc René-Lévesque, near Lake St. Louis, the artwork presents a three-masted sailing ship attached to the top of a tall metal tripod. In the centre of the unfurled sails are faces of fictional explorers. A connection might be made between the elevation of the ship above the ground and the ambitions of European explorers who discovered the New World. The ship’s prow points north, but although it represents a weathervane, the object is fixed and sustained by an imaginary wind. The artwork may be interpreted as a questioning of human nature, ambitions, and the will to explore the world.
