There are two large statues, some 20 feet high and constructed of concrete, each showing an adult crow, a nest and a baby crow all in a tree. An excellent description of the construction and history of these two statues is found on Vic Bergman's blog article titled "Something to Crow About", and the reader is encouraged to visit that blog to learn the full story and view a number of excellent photos of the two statues. The following details (as well as details used to populate some of the variables below) are taken directly from his blog:
  • Constructed in 1958, the sculpture is of a 12-foot-long crow perched atop a 20-foot-tall tree, with a baby crow in a nest on the opposite side.
  • It was designed and created by local artist, Franz Josef Koci, when he was a student at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary.
  • The crows are made of concrete, each weighing about a ton.
  • The structure is reinforced with steel railway rails running through the tree trunk.
  • Two such crow sculptures were commissioned by the Blairmore Board of Trade.
  • At the time, Highway 3 passed directly through Main Street in Blairmore, and everyone passing through town would have seen both crow sculptures.
