Copper mining operations in the area of Kearny started in 1880. In 1955 Kennecott Copper changed their mining approach to an open pit operation. While expanding the pit, the company consumed three older mining communities, Ray, Sonora and Barcelona. To handle the need for employee housing, Kennecott built the town of Kearny ten miles from the mine. The business section of the town consists of one street. Houses were constructed on the hillside descending down to the Gila River. Miners who wished, could have their existing house relocated at the company's expense. Kearny continues to function as an active community while the older mining towns remaining in the area are in rapid decline.
