The 1903 gray granite monument is set on a short limestone base. The monument is approximately 2-feet square in plan, and three feet high. The stone is rough-faced, with a smooth inscribed panel on its south face, which reads:

HERE WAS FIRED
THE FIRST GUN
FOR TEXAS INDEPENDENCE
OCT. 2, 1835
ERECTED BY THE
CHILDREN OF GONZALES
CITY SCHOOLS
APR. 21, 1903
