A Norman font in St James' church, Jacobstow.

"Placed at the West end of the nave, close to the West respond of the South arcade. Of Altamun (?) type (visit link) , very similar to nearby Warbstow font, except the rosettes are six-petalled and one corner head (NE) is clearly bearded; also the West face has a smaller rosette flanked by a cupped trefoil leaf and a roughly incised flower motif, the area above being left rough-hewn. The basal cable moulding of the bow, tooling marks and the use of Hick's Grey Millstone are all similar to Warbstow (visit link) . The bulbous base, which is slightly more tapering, rests on a shallow modern base. The octagonal stem supports a bowl without a lead lining for the basin.

Dimensions -
Depth of basin 0.25 m
Diameter of base 0.87 m
Height of base 0.29 m
Height of bowl 0.47 m
Height of font 0.95 m
Height of stem 0.19 m
Width of square at top 0.83 m
Width of stem 0.56 m

Date of font: 2nd half of the 12thc. Probably from the same workshop as the Warbstow font."
